Parenting - Helping Our Kids Feel Loved is Easier Than We Thought

Girls Talking - Autism + Support

Hi Parents In Our Autism Community - Jerry Seinfeld has some encouragement for you.

Jerry's thoughts below, but first, I (Michael) was thinking:

What do we so often feel like failures?

Why do we feel like we are letting our kids down?

In my career I’ve worked with more than 10,000 parents, professionally.

Out of 10,000, I only ever met 2 parents who thought they were doing a good job. Both those parents were as crazy as could be. But why do the rest of us feel so bad?

As a parent, sometimes I feel bad because:

  • I should be giving my kids more time or
  • I should be giving them healthier food or
  • I shouldn’t be giving them so much computer time when I’m exhausted.
  • I should be more patient than I am with them.
  • But sometimes just surviving the day is enough, isn't it?

The comedian Jerry Seinfield:

He has three kids— and here’s what he says:

“I’m a believer in the ordinary and the mundane. These guys that talk about ‘quality time’ – I always find that a little sad when they say, ‘We have quality time.’

I don’t want quality time. I want the garbage time. That’s what I like.

You just see them in their room reading a comic book and you get to kind of watch that for a minute…

Having a bowl of [chips] at 11 o’clock at night when they’re not even supposed to be up.

The garbage, that’s what I love.”

(Quoted from ‘dailydad’)

So I don’t know about you, but I’m going to choose to relax a bit and drop some of the guilt that goes with being a parent.

If parenting was easy, everyone would do it. Let’s give ourselves credit for just doing our best.
