Here's a Much Easier Way to Handle MELTDOWNS (Especially After School/End of Day) :)

Girls Talking - Autism + Support

Why is My Child Melting Down?

Because the whole day has felt overwhelming.

Life feels super-hard. My school-mates didn’t listen to me. People didn’t include me. I have masked and coped and pretended all day long but I’ve got nothing left.

I have done so well to hold it all together until now, but it’s just too much!

What Do I Need From Mum/Dad Right Now?

A way of deescalating and calming down these crazy emotions that are hard to handle.

Maybe a space where I play games, or listen to headphones by myself in my room, or just hide away from the world, or get lost in a movie or something.

Here’s the BIG THING for PARENTS to know:

Trying to correct me and help me change my outlook and choices right now is not going to help, because it will keep me right at the edge of frustration and overwhelm.

The best time to talk to me about making better choices or dealing with these emotions in a healthier way would be tomorrow, sometime early in the day after I have reset a bit.

Let’s Try Something New Here…

Imagine if we could create a safe space for me to de-escalate 45-60 minutes. A spot to calm down. To just recover a bit and get back into a calm and brave headspace.

Even better, imagine if that was part of the daily routine as soon as we got home from school.

You're a super-parent. You've got this. Also, if there's anything we can do to support your family, just reply and let us know.

This is unbelievably sad for me to write. I’ll bet this is something your child deals with. In fact, I sort of dare you to have a chat with your child and find out.
